The Core Centre

Bowel control and constipation

We can help with:

  • Constipation/ difficulty emptying bowels
  • Faecal incontinence (leakage of poo)
  • Reduce control of wind
  • Sudden need to pass a bowel motion (faecal urgency)
  • Pain with passing a bowel motion

Normal bowel motions may occur anywhere from 3x/day to 3x/week. Faeces/stool/poo should be soft, formed and easy to pass. Difficulty controlling wind or faeces, and/or difficulty emptying bowels are commonly reported, however are not normal.

Our pelvic health physiotherapists will complete a thorough history and examination to understand your bowel dysfunction. Management strategies include retraining the pelvic floor for optimal control of wind and faeces. Learning to relax the pelvic floor muscles during defecation/pooing is essential for effective emptying. Your fluid, diet and lifestyle play a significant role in your bowel function and we are well positioned to help you improve this.
